Daniel Webster once said, “Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.”
Once again we see this being done when sixty four sheriffs in this state have decided that you do not need to protect yourself by having a firearm in your vehicle unless you buy a permit. And why these men, who were elected by their constituents, continue to listen to Bobby Timmons, Executive Director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association, is beyond me? Who is Bobby Timmons? He is someone who evidently thinks his word is final when it comes to Alabama gun law. I have asked two sheriffs and an executive high up in the NRA how the ASA got to a place that they have become such a powerful voice in Alabama gun rights. Here is the answer I got from all three, “good question”. Mr. Timmons perception of himself and the ASA has become quite the joke among those that are tired of his boasting. He seems to think his opinion is all that matters. I have news for Mr. Timmons and the ASA. He and the ASA need to get back to what they were founded for which is according to my understanding is helping LE with legal advice other benefits but not making law and deciding what law is good for the citizens of Alabama. While he thinks he speaks for all 67 sheriffs not all agree with him. At least three voted for SB-14 and our constitutional rights. I have been told by VERY GOOD sources that there are probably up to a dozen more who really have no problem with SB-14 but are fearful of the personal attacks they would suffer from their peers mainly the District Attorneys Association, County Commissioners and the Alabama Sheriffs Association.
That is disappointing to me seeing that Mr. Timmons and the rest of the sheriffs in this state did not put them in office. The voters did! Every one of them took an oath to uphold the constitution but they voted no on backing SB-14. It is sad that these men claim to be conservative men as well as a few claim to be bible believing fundamental Christians. Such are the times we live in. Hard to tell who is what any more. But I have said for years, don’t listen to what they say, WATCH WHAT THEY DO!
I’m reminded of the verse, Mar 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
Here is how I read what the sheriffs that we elected are saying, “We believe in the second amendment…BUT! But we do not care that every state that borders us as well as a number of them that also border those states, allow permit less vehicle carry. We do not care what you the people want. We do not believe in the constitution as the forefathers intended it to be believed. We do not care that those states that allow permit less vehicle carry really have no problems. We are your masters and we will decide what you need. We know what is best. We have good intentions.
Jer 12:5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?
In today’s plain language. “If the footmen tire you , what will you do when the horsemen come?” When the Feds come to register and or confiscate personal firearms in the name of “safety” will you roll over? Will you run when the horsemen come and tell you that you must do the bidding of the state? Will you run when they tell you that you must change your way of thinking? Will, at that time when the horsemen come, will you once again tell us that you believe in the second amendment…. But….? I dare say that if you do not stand now for the small things you will never stand when the horsemen come. And they are coming! Can’t trust you now and will not trust you then.
Let me quote Daniel Webster once more. “Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.”
I chuckled when I saw this the first time on the “Alabama Sheriffs Association” website.
“Every Sheriff in Alabama takes the Oath of Office to support the Constitution of the United States, including the 2nd Amendment, and the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, including Article I, Section 26.
The Alabama Sheriffs support the laws of the land, as they EXPECT all the citizens of Alabama to do.” (Emphasis mine).
I do not think I have ever read a more arrogant, pompous statement in my life. Read it for yourself here. http://www.alabamasheriffs.com/
How about this, “We the people of Alabama who elected you, obey both the Alabama Constitution and the United States Constitution as we expect and demand that every one of you do!
