The most important duty of any and every sheriff in Alabama is to fulfill the “Oath or Affirmation” that he takes.
“I, …, solemnly swear (or affirm, as the case may be) that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Alabama, so long as I continue a citizen thereof; and that I will faithfully and honestly discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter, to the best of my ability. So help me God.”
To this end, a sheriff must rigorously perform his constitutional duty to “take care that the laws be faithfully enforced and protected”, the Constitution being FIRST and FOREMOST among those “Laws” not a sheriff’s opinions of what he wished the law said or money or officer safety or any other made up ideas in this case as to why permits are needed.
I have looked at every website I could find for the sheriffs in Alabama and I think all make reference to being some sort of champion of the second amendment. They all claim to be believers and staunch defenders of what they describe as “Second Amendment Rights”.
When Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning wrote his nonsensical letter (http://www.madisoncountysheriffal.org/message.php) and placed it on his web page it reaffirmed my belief that a number of these sheriffs are either ignorant to the intent of the Founders or are just plain deceitful. He states, “I fully support and defend our right to keep and bear arms as written by our Founding Fathers of the Constitution reinforced in the Second Amendment.” I say Sheriff, how can you make that claim if you think you have the right to sell government permission slips to exercise that right?
Then along comes Sheriff Todd Entrekin who is quoted in the Gadsden Times, “Entrekin said he’s a supporter of the Second Amendment”, but he has opposed changes in the law challenging a sheriff’s right to use discretion in giving concealed-carry permits. Again, this sheriff is a partial supporter of the second amendment. His support ends where he has decided it should end. The constitution only gets in his way.
Unfortunately, a careful reading of these men’s declarations demonstrates deficiencies in both their understanding of those “Rights” and their proper applications.
The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed upon, PERIOD! It would be preferable for these men when quoting the second to quote not just the last fourteen words, but also the thirteen words which precede them: namely, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State”. For those words encapsulate the true purpose of the Amendment, enabling anyone who cares to study American pre-constitutional law and history to comprehend the full meaning of the Amendment’s last fourteen words.
I have heard and read some of our sheriffs and other LE make partial truth statements and I hope not to purposefully mislead but I have my doubts. Some of those statements include, “the Second Amendment’s purpose is to guarantee our right to defend ourselves and our families”, or “This is about self-defense, plain and simple.” While this is true to a degree yet it is not nor ever was THE reason for the second amendment. The defense of individuals and their families—solely as individuals and families—is but a very small part of the constitutional picture. The Second Amendment’s true purpose is to guarantee Americans the right—and to insure for them the ability to perform the duty—to defend their communities, to the end of securing “a free State” at every level of the federal system throughout this country. Ultimately, the Second Amendment provides for the perpetuation of those “well regulated Militia” which it declares to be “necessary to the security of a free State”. Mere individuals and families—as isolated individuals and families—cannot possibly succeed through individual self-defense in thwarting the kinds of threats most likely to endanger “the security of a free State”.
It is time that the ignorance and or lies that are being propagated throughout this state be exposed and those that propagate be exposed also. I have NO CONFIDENCE in any LE officer that will put his or her opinion over what was clearly the intent of the founders who paid a higher price than any of us living today to give men FREEDOM nor can I back anyone be he politician or LE who thinks that they have the right to sell government permission slips to citizens of this nation in order to exercise that right. At that point it ceases to be a right and has now become a government privilege!
Come March 1st you will see a host of LE driving taxpayer owned automobiles to the statehouse burning fuel bought by the taxpayer and taking time away from their responsibilities to round up the wagons and stand tall as oath breakers as they have done three years prior. They will listen to their leader, the Executive Director of the Alabama Sheriffs Association, Bobby Timmons make his comments as he has done year after year and even distort the truth (whether willfully or in ignorance) if he has to as he did last year when he claimed citizens of Georgia had to pass a background check before they could carry without a permit in their vehicle. He knew better than that but in my opinion he didn’t care. Some sheriffs will show up because they fear the retribution from their peers. They have already been told that they will lose their funding if SB24 passes. Mr. Timmons starts the fear mongering every year and his opening words at the upcoming hearing will be the same as they have been the three years prior. It is disgusting to see so many acting as lap dogs and continue to listen to a liberal democrat spout what a third grader will know is distorted or flat out untruthful. We do not care what he wants. What we want is the Alabama Sheriffs Association leadership replaced with solid conservative leadership who understand and believe the truth and are willing to see Alabama move forward. They are nothing more than a private organization that loves to act as if they are a government entity. He knows in most states that have Constitutional Carry permit sales have increased. Both Wyoming and Arizona have increased the last two years.
I hope they understand they better start fearing the retribution of the people who voted them into office as the voting booths will be used to remove and replace every last one of them. The liberals laughed at President Trump and said there was not a chance in hades that he would get elected and some here in this state might laugh at BamaCarry and it’s nearly 20,000 followers and say no way can they affect us. Keep saying that as we keep growing. We have truth on our side and we will win! We are seeing this on the federal level and we will see it on the local level. We the people have had enough of deceit, purposeful “fake news” and fear mongering and we will be heard. A revival of patriotism is happening!
So where are the sheriffs who secretly have said they have no problem with SB24? Why do you refuse to stand up and be counted alongside Sheriff Mike Hale? You should be ashamed. You work for your constituents not the Alabama Sheriffs Association. Honor your oath and stand for what our Founders gave all for or take down your signs and stop making “fake” statements about how you are a supporter of the second amendment. At least be man enough to say you support the second amendment as long as we pay you for your permission slip to exercise that right. I used to look up to the sheriffs of this state 40 years ago. What happened? Has power corrupted everyone? Is it money? Just what is it that causes a man to dishonor his oath and sell his birthright at the altar of this world’s corrupt political system?
You will never gain the respect of true patriots as long as you dishonor your oath. Is Sheriff Hale going to stand alone again this year? Is there not one fundamentally sound patriot that will stand up and say, “You’re right! It is wrong to sell permission slips to exercise a right”. Criminals do not buy your permission slip and they still carry everywhere they go and every last one of you know it. So is it the money or the power? Or is it both?
